EDU 607: Assessing and Managing Learning

Performance Assessment Development

This assessment was developed because I feel that often times when scoring students’ math abilities we tend to look at the answers to the problems as correct or incorrect. I think by deconstructing the standard, creating an assessment, and creating a rubric that focuses on the learning targets teachers will have more data. The assessment and rubric were developed by looking at the learning targets. This will provide the teacher with more information on student understanding of the standard. Students will also benefit from using the student friendly rubric to set expectations at the beginning of the unit and using the rubric during the assessment as a checklist.

This process has helped me realize the importance of deconstructing the standard and developing learning targets. I have also realize that by involving students in the process they will be more invested in their learning and more engaged in the lessons. Using student friendly language helps students understand the standards and connecting to the lessons. Students will also take ownership of their learning using the students friendly rubric.
